News Updates - Heavyweight Tournament Semi Finals
And Then There Were Two.........LBA Heavyweight Championship Final is Set!
CINCINNATI, OH - Following is a recap of the semi-final matches in the LBA Heavyweight Championship Tournament:
#1 Joe Louis vs. #13 Jack Johnson - After an even first round, the undefeated, top ranked Louis began to assert his will on the fight in round 2. A big left hook early in the round and a huge right cross late stunned Johnson, and set the tone for what was to come. After a close third round, Johnson was enjoying his best round in the 4th, utilizing his jab and moving away from Louis' power shots. But late in the round, another left hook stunned Johnson and sent him reeling into the ropes. The left hook continued to be a potent weapon for the Brown Bomber throughout the 5th round, as he scored with it to both the head and body. In the 6th, Louis cam charging out of his corner and dropped the Galveston Giant almost immediately with a flurry of punches. Johnson regained his feet, but was hurt again by a left hook to the body before being knocked down again by a right cross. This time, Johnson could not beat the count. Louis won his 13th straight fight, remaining the LBA's only undefeated fighter. WINNER - Joe Louis by 6th round KO.
#6 Muhammed Ali vs. #10 Rocky Marciano - In what promised to be a classic confrontation between boxer and slugger, Rocky Marciano arrived determined to prove the experts wrong. From the opening bell of the first round, Marciano was on the attack, hurting Ali with an uppercut, and then again with a looping hook. Late in the round, another Marciano uppercut floored Ali, who responded at the count of 8. The promising start, however, quickly developed into a frustrating evening, as a reinvigorated Ali began to use his quickness to befuddle the slow footed Marciano. Ali controlled virtually every round after the opening frame, and by the 14th, an exhausted and desperate Marciano suffered a knockdown of his own. Despite his best efforts, Rocky was simply never able to establish any rhythm in the fight, and Ali simply piled up a bigger and bigger lead, until the final bell rang. WINNER - Muhammed Ali by 15 round unanimous decision.
