News Updates - Heavyweight Prelim - Round 2
CINCINNATI, OH - Michael Moorer
is on a roll. After winning Fighter of the Night for his
stunning upset of
Mike Tyson in Round 1, Moorer scored a second upset in Round 2, outpointing
Ezzard Charles over 15 rounds. For Charles, the loss was his second in a
row, once again disappointing his hometown fans.
"I believe I won the fight", said Charles afterward. "Sooner or later, these judges have got to give me some credit."
The night also featured an awesome battle between Max Schmeling (1-0, 1 KO) and John L. Sullivan (0-1). Sullivan came to the ring less than fully prepared, and Schmeling floored him in the second round. As the fight wore on, however, Sullivan gained steam, rocking Schmeling in the late rounds. A furious finish in the 15th, however, was not enough, as Max survived the stanza, and held on to win a majority decision. The appreciative crowd gave both men a standing ovation.
The Fight of the Night, however, was an incredible see-saw affair between James J. Jefferies (1-0, 1 KO), and Bob Fitzsimmons (0-1). Jefferies, fresh off a 1st round KO victory over Floyd Patterson, was clearly looking to add another quick stoppage to his resume, battering Fitzsimmons from the opening bell. In the 7th round, however, the struggling Fitzsimmons landed a perfect left hook that flattened The Boilermaker. Jefferies struggled to his feet and survived the round, but was clearly never the same during the fight. Fitzsimmons pursued Jefferies for the remaining 8 rounds, but couldn't do enough, in the minds of the judges, to secure any more than a moral victory.
