1st Round of Preliminary Bouts Completed - Michael Moorer Scores Stunning Upset!
CINCINNATI, OH - In the first
round of Preliminary bouts, Michael Moorer scored a stunning upset, defeating
heavily favored Mike Tyson by TKO. Moorer, whose chin is known to be
suspect, suffered a first round knockdown at the hands of "Iron Mike".
Much
to the surprise of the crowd at the Cincinnati Gardens, Moorer got back to
his feet and survived the round. Moorer began to use his jab, punishing
the left eye of Tyson. Tyson continued to land big shots, hurting Moorer
in the 4th and 6th rounds. But Moorer used his clever boxing skills to
frustrate Tyson's attempts to finish the fight. In the 9th round, referee
Steve Smoger stopped the fight, ruling that Tyson, who was leading on all
cards, could no longer see out of his badly swollen left eye. The heavily
pro-Tyson crowd had a fiercely negative reaction to the decision, and bouts had
to be stopped for 35 minutes until the crowd calmed.
In other action on the card, Buster Douglas won a surprising 15 round unanimous decision over hometown favorite Ezzard Charles, Jim Jefferies and Rocky Marciano both scored crushing first-round knockouts (Jefferies over Floyd Patterson, and Marciano over Shannon Briggs), and Evander Holyfield and Max Baer fought to a technical draw. A headbutt in the second round caused a cut over Baer's right eye, forcing the premature stoppage of the bout. Holyfield and Baer will rematch in the second round.
