News Updates - Heavyweight Prelim - Round 10
Brackets Set for Tourney After Wild Finish in Round 10!!!
CINCINNATI, OH - It was a wild, wild finish to secure the final 2 spots in the Heavyweight Championship Tournament. Joe Frazier (6-4, 6 KO) blew out Ingemar Johansen to secure the #15 spot in the rankings. Meanwhile, the #1 and #2 ranked fighters, George Foreman and Riddick Bowe, both lost to superior technical fighters -- Jack Johnson survived an early battering from Foreman to wear him down and score a late TKO, while Gene Tunney was simply too precise for the free swinging Bowe, scoring an easy unanimous decision victory. Joe Louis (10-0, 8 KO) destroyed Jim Jefferies in 1 round to fish the prelims as the only undefeated fighter, and seize the #1 seed.
There were still four men,
however, competing for the right to be Louis' first round
opponent. Michael
Moorer held the #16 spot going into the night, and faced #18 Buster Douglas.
After outboxing Douglas over the first two rounds, Moorer landed a series of
blatant low blows in the third, and earned a well deserved disqualification.
It was a disappointing but strangely appropriate end for Moorer, who squandered
a great early start with a series of pathetic efforts. Douglas, by virtue
of the win, moved into the #16 position, his second straight via DQ.
In the final fight of the
night, however, Mike Tyson, who entered the night at #19, came
storming back after a slow start against #17 Joe Walcott. He floored
Walcott in the 11th and 12th rounds to steal a close unanimous decision.
With the win, Tyson (5-5, 2 KO) slipped past Buster Douglas by one point to take
the 16th and final spot in the tournament.
