LBA to Start Light Heavyweight Competition

CINCINNATI, OH - The LBA Commissioner announced today that the LBA will begin competition soon to determine the first LBA Light Heavyweight Champion of the World.  The eligible competitors will be the 28 men determined to have held the "linear light heavyweight title".  While there is some controversy surrounding the selections, the Commissioner is standing by the list used.  "We could go around and around about the light heavyweight lineage, and you will never get everyone to agree.  These 28 men are all excellent fighters, and the competition should be tremendous", said the Commissioner in a prepared statement.  For a list of the 28 fighters to be included in the competition, please check the Rosters section.

The First LBA Heavyweight Champion Has Been Determined!!!!

CINCINNATI, OH - In a classic matchup between two of boxing's greatest stars, Joe Louis and Muhammed Ali squared off to determine the first ever LBA Heavyweight Champion.  Following is a round by round summary of their battle:

ROUND 1: The two fighters spent the opening minute feeling each other out.  Then, after trading combinations, Louis landed the first big punch of the night, a left hook that shook Ali.  Ali came back with some quick punches, then moved away and made Louis miss.  COMMISH'S CARD: Ali, 10-9.

ROUND 2: Ali came out quickly, landing a short uppercut to start the round.  Dertermined to force the action more in round 2, Louis bobbed and weaved his way inside, scoring with a solid left hook.  Louis then landed a lead right, and Ali tied him up.  After some pushing and shoving, Ali snuck a jab in, but Louis came back with another lead right hand.  Ali landed a quick combination, Louis landed a strong uppercut, and then Ali came back with another combination to close the round to loud applause.  COMMISH'S CARD: Louis, 10-9.

ROUND 3:   Ali again started the round quickly, landing a combination to the head and body.  However, he left himself exposed, and Louis responded with a prefect uppercut on the inside.  Ali tried to move away, but Louis caught him with a quick combination.  Louis then scored with a series of jabs, followed by a right cross.  After an uneventful final minute, Louis closed the round with a solid double hook.  COMMISH'S CARD: Louis, 10-9.

ROUND 4:   With momentum on his side, Louis came out in the fourth round throwing big shots with both hands, scoring with the hook and the cross.  But Ali regrouped and began tattooing Louis with his patented, effective combinations. Ali then landed a huge uppercut that staggered Louis.  Louis recovered, but was ineffective for the remainder of the round.  COMMISH'S CARD: Ali, 10-9.

ROUND 5:  Round five was a cautious and uneventful round for both fighters.  Ali landed some jabs, and Louis responded with a solid uppercut, but overall there was much more clinching than punching for most of the round.  In the final ten seconds, however, Louis landed a destructive left hook that sent Ali reeling.  Louis had no time to capitalize on the big punch, but it was enough to win him the round.  COMMISH'S CARD: Louis, 10-9.

ROUND 6:   Louis opened the round with a solid jab, but left an opening for Ali when he missed badly with the right hand.  Ali threw a flurry of punches, but Louis responded with a flurry of his own, clearly winning the exchange.  Ali moved away, and began to box from the outside again.  Louis deftly cut off the ring and scored a big combination with Ali trapped in the corner.  At the midpoint of the round, Louis landed a crushing right cross that stunned Ali.  For the first time in the fight, the legendary killer instinct of the Brown Bomber was on display.  So too, however, was Ali's equally legendary quickness.  Louis landed some effective punches, but Ali was able to avoid most of the blows and survive the round.  COMMISH'S CARD: Louis, 10-9

ROUND 7:  The opening minute saw a great many punches, but few solid connections, as both fighters struggled to find the range.  Finally, Ali ducked under a Louis hook and landed a clean uppercut to the body, only to be warned by referee Steve Smoger for a low blow.  Louis came back with a nice right cross, and then, in a moment quite out of character, taunted Ali by motioning with his gloves.  The remainder of the round was uneventful, and the crowd was relieved to see it come to an end.  COMMISH'S CARD: Even, 10-10.

ROUND 8:  Needing to win a round to get back in the fight, Ali came out with much greater urgency in round 8, scoring consistently with both the jab and the right hand.  After absorbing a big hook from Louis, Ali scored with a series of solid combinations, moving away deftly after each one.  Ali clearly had his finest round, as his near-perfect defense kept Louis at bay for the full three minutes.  COMMISH'S CARD: Ali, 10-9.

ROUND 9:  Louis charged out of his corner to start round nine, and charged right into a hard combination that stopped him in his tracks.  Ali wasted no time in returning to the movement that served him so well in the previous round.  As the final minute approached, Louis trapped Ali in a neutral corner.  As Ali tried to escape, Louis landed a vicious hook.  Ali's knees buckled and he fell to the canvas.  Ali got to his feet at the count of 8, but was clearly still hurting.  Louis tried to take advantage, but once again Ali's quickness allowed him to avoid further punishment.  COMMISH'S CARD: Louis, 10-8.

ROUND 10:  Much like round 7, the tenth round was a mostly uneventful affair.  However, there were a couple of nice flurries by both fighters to open and close the round, but no one gained a clear advantage.  Ali was shaking off the effects of the previous round's knockdown, and Louis seemed all to willing to allow him.  COMMISH'S CARD: Even, 10-10.

ROUND 11:  Ali, again staying on the move, landed a solid jab early in the round, but Louis came right back with a right cross.  As Louis tried to bully his way inside, Ali wrapped his arms around him until referee Steve Smoger could break them up.  The fighter then traded a series of combinations, with neither man gaining a clear advantage.  As the round came to a close, Louis landed another good combination, perhaps stealing the round in the process.  COMMISH'S CARD: Louis, 10-9.

ROUND 12:  Trailing, unofficially, by four points with 4 rounds remaining, Ali needed a good round in the 12th.  However, he was also clearly showing signs of exhaustion from the previous 11 rounds of action.  Ali came out on the attack, but Louis, now suddenly the hunted rather than the hunter, was able to back Ali up with a series of strong jabs.  Ali landed a combination, and Louis came back with a nice, clean uppercut on the inside, just before the two fighters clashed heads.  Fortunately, no cuts resulted from the impact.  Ali landed another flurry as the round closed.  COMMISH'S CARD: Ali, 10-9.

ROUND 13:  Ali again came out aggressively, landing a ripping left hook.  Louis came back with a solid jab to the chest, and the round settled into another display of inaction.  This time, however, it was Louis who was on his horse, cautiously staying away from Ali in an effort to protect his lead.  COMMISH'S CARD: Even, 10-10.

ROUND 14:  At this point, the unofficial score card had Louis up 3 points, meaning Ali needed, at the least, a knockdown in the final two rounds to pull out the fight.  In the opening minute of round 14, Ali scored a perfect uppercut that, for a brief moment, looked to be the punch he needed.  Louis' legs buckled, but he remained on his feet.  Still, Ali attacked with great success throughout the round, working behind his jab.  In the final minute, Ali scored a brilliant right cross, staggering Louis for a second time.  COMMISH'S CARD: Ali, 10-9.

ROUND 15:  While most observes felt Louis was ahead going into the final round, the fight was clearly too close to call.  Both men came out aggressive in the final round, looking to end the fight.  Ali landed the first telling punch, an uppercut on the inside.  Louis came back with a left hook, and then Ali responded with a combination.  While both fighters were game, they were also both clearly tired, and the fatigue began to show late in the round, as both men began clinching and holding.  There was to be no knockout, as Ali closed the show with a series of quick, but only marginally effective, punches. COMMISH'S CARD: Ali, 10-9.

After 15 rounds of action, my unofficial scorecard had the fight 144-143 for Joe Louis, giving him the fight by the slimmest of margins, thanks to the 9th round knockdown.  The official scores were as follows:

Judge Tommy Kaczmarek scored the bout 146-143, Joe Louis.

Judge Harold Lederman scored it 145-142, Joe Louis.

Judge Chuck Giampa scored it 145-143, for the winner, and 1st ever LBA Heavyweight Champion of the World.......

JOE LOUIS!
